Strategic Sailing
When the context in which you operate is highly volatile—which is true for most companies these days—you’ll want to get back on track quickly. By “getting back on track,” I mean that, within the framework of your mission and that new context, you’ve adjusted your most important strategic goals and realigned your day-to-day execution with them.
You can think of an organization as a sailboat. You’re on a journey through your waters (your mission). When the wind blows from the same direction every day (the context remains the same) and your sails are set properly (the strategy is working), then you don’t need to adjust your sails (the strategy remains unchanged). If the wind changes frequently (the context is changeable), then you want to be able to luff and bear away quickly and easily, or even tack and jibe (adjust your strategy) if necessary.
So what you want is to have a simple method in place that allows you to quickly revise your strategy on any deck. That way, you don’t limit yourself to just one day a year; instead, you opt for effective, iterative strategic review whenever the context calls for it.
